Our dinner follows a rotating seasonal menu — specific dishes may vary day to day depending on the kitchen and available ingredients.

Reservations are required. Same-day dinner bookings must be made before noon.

If you have dietary requirements such as vegetarian, gluten-free, or allergies, please let us know when booking and we will do our best to accommodate.

For children ages 5–12, the menu choice must be confirmed at the time of reservation.

The ranch is located about 26 km from Clearwater — many guests find it most convenient to pre-book dinner with us.

Guests are welcome to enjoy our Board Game Library in the saloon area during the evening.

How do I make a reservation?

You can book directly through our website by selecting your accommodation, dates, and number of guests. Alternatively, you can call us or send an email for assistance with your booking.

What is your cancellation policy?

We offer full refunds for cancellations made 60+ days before arrival. Cancellations 31-60 days before arrival receive a 50% refund. Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds for cancellations made less than 30 days before arrival.

Is there a minimum stay requirement?

Yes, our log cabins require a minimum 2-night stay. However, 1-night stays may be available for last-minute bookings (within 7 days) or to fill gaps between existing reservations. Some peak periods may require longer minimum stays.

What time is check-in and check-out?

Check-in is from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Check-out is by 11:00 AM. If you need to arrive outside these hours, please contact us in advance to make arrangements.

Can I modify my reservation?

Yes, reservations can be modified subject to availability. Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to change your dates or accommodation type.

What amenities are included in the cabins?

Our accommodations vary by type. Deluxe Log Cabin Rooms include kitchenettes, fireplaces, private bathrooms, and entertainment systems. Standard rooms include private bathrooms and basic amenities. Rustic camping cabins have beds but no electricity or running water. All guests have access to the ranch amenities.

Are linens and towels provided?

Yes, all cabins and rooms come with fresh linens, towels, and basic toiletries. Camping cabin guests can rent sleeping bags and pillows if needed.

Is there WiFi available?

WiFi is available in the main lodge and some cabin areas. However, coverage may be limited in some locations. We encourage guests to disconnect and enjoy the wilderness experience!

Are pets allowed?

Pets are considered on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us before booking if you wish to bring a pet, as restrictions and fees may apply.

What is the difference between Standard and Deluxe cabins?

Deluxe Log Cabin Rooms offer more space, a kitchenette with basic cooking facilities, fireplace, and enhanced entertainment. Standard rooms are cozier with essential amenities and are available summer season only.

Do I need riding experience for the trail rides?

No experience is necessary! We offer rides for all skill levels, from beginner intro rides to more advanced trail rides. Our guides will assess your comfort level and match you with an appropriate horse.

What are the weight and age restrictions for riding?

For safety reasons, riders must weigh less than 220 lbs (100 kg) and meet minimum age requirements (varies by ride type). Children 16 and under must wear helmets. The Kids Lead Ride is specifically designed for children under 10.

What should I wear for horseback riding?

Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes with a small heel (like boots or sturdy sneakers). Avoid sandals, flip-flops, or loose clothing. Layers are recommended as weather can change.

Can I book activities without staying at the ranch?

Yes, day visitors can book horseback rides and dining reservations, subject to availability. Staying guests have priority for activity bookings.

What happens if it rains?

Light rain rarely stops our rides - this is the wilderness! However, in severe weather conditions, we may reschedule or cancel for safety. We'll contact you to make alternative arrangements.

Do I need to make dining reservations?

Reservations are recommended, especially for dinner. Breakfast is served 8:00-9:30 AM, and dinner is served family-style at 6:30 PM. Same-day dinner reservations must be made by noon.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes! We can accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice. Please let us know about allergies, vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free needs when making your reservation.

Are meals included in the accommodation price?

Meals are not automatically included but can be added to your booking. We offer breakfast and dinner packages for convenient planning during your stay.

Is there a dress code?

The saloon has a casual, ranch-style atmosphere. Come as you are - clean outdoor wear is perfectly acceptable. No need to dress up!

How do I get to the ranch?

We're located about 40 km from Clearwater, BC on Wells Gray Road. The drive from Kamloops takes about 1.5 hours. Fill up on gas in Clearwater as there are no services between town and the ranch.

Is cell phone service available?

Cell service is very limited at the ranch and surrounding area. We have a landline for emergencies and WiFi in the main lodge. Consider it a chance to truly unplug!

What should I pack?

Pack layers for variable weather, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a flashlight. For riding: long pants and closed-toe shoes. Don't forget your camera for the stunning scenery!

Are there ATMs or stores nearby?

The nearest ATM, gas station, and grocery store are in Clearwater (40 km). We recommend bringing cash for incidentals and stocking up on any necessities before arriving.

Is the ranch accessible for guests with mobility issues?

Our main lodge is accessible, and we have some ground-floor accommodations. Please contact us before booking to discuss your specific needs and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

The History of Wells Gray Guest Ranch

Wells Gray Guest Ranch has been welcoming guests to the wild beauty of British Columbia since 1968. Nestled along the shores of a pristine lake, just outside the gates of Wells Gray Provincial Park, the ranch began as a modest family operation with a handful of horses and a deep love for the land.

Over the decades, the ranch evolved from a simple homestead into a beloved destination for travellers seeking authentic wilderness experiences. Different families poured their heart into the property, each leaving their mark — adding cabins, expanding the trail network, and building the saloon that would become the social heart of the ranch.

Today, under the stewardship of Arne Schellemans and Tunde Nemeth, the ranch continues that proud tradition — blending old-world western hospitality with modern comforts, while honouring the land and the generations who came before.

A Journey Through Time

1918

Wells Gray Guest Ranch is established near Clearwater, BC — beginning a legacy of wilderness hospitality in the heart of what would become Wells Gray Provincial Park.

1926

The ranch survives the devastating wildfires of 1926 that swept through the region — a testament to the resilience of the early settlers and their deep roots in this land.

1980s

The ranch grows in reputation as a premier wilderness destination. New log cabins are added and the trail network through the surrounding forest expands significantly.

2000s

The Black Horse Saloon opens, becoming the heart of evening life at the ranch — a gathering place for guests, storytelling, and hearty ranch-style dinners.

2020s

Arne Schellemans and Tunde Nemeth purchase the ranch, bringing fresh vision and a commitment to preserving its legacy while welcoming guests from across the world.

Wells Gray Provincial Park

One of British Columbia's Greatest Wilderness Treasures

Wells Gray Provincial Park is one of the largest and most spectacular parks in British Columbia, encompassing over 540,000 hectares of untamed wilderness. Named after Arthur Wellesley Gray, who served as BC's Minister of Lands from 1933 to 1941, the park was established to protect a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty.

The park's landscape was largely shaped by massive volcanic activity and repeated glaciation over millions of years. The result is a dramatic terrain of ancient lava flows, volcanic cones, deep river canyons, and hundreds of stunning waterfalls — including Helmcken Falls, one of Canada's most impressive waterfalls, plunging 141 metres into the Murtle River canyon.

The Secwépemc (Shuswap) people have called this land home for thousands of years, following the cycles of salmon, moose, and caribou through the valleys and highlands. Their deep connection to this landscape long predates the park's formal establishment, and their cultural heritage is woven into the identity of the region.

Home to over 40 named waterfalls, including Helmcken Falls (141m), Dawson Falls, and Spahats Falls. The park is often called the 'Waterfall Park' of BC.

Rich Wildlife

Moose, black bears, grizzly bears, wolves, caribou, eagles, and over 200 bird species inhabit the park. Wildlife sightings are common, especially at dawn and dusk.

Volcanic Landscape

Ancient lava flows, volcanic cones, and mineral-rich lakes create a landscape unlike anywhere else in Canada — a living record of the earth's geological past.

Wilderness Recreation

Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and wildlife viewing draw visitors from around the world. The park offers everything from easy walks to multi-day backcountry expeditions.

The Park Through the Ages

Pre-1913

The Secwépemc people have inhabited this region for thousands of years, using the land for hunting, fishing, and gathering. European fur traders and explorers begin moving through the area in the early 1800s.

Wells Gray Provincial Park is officially established by the BC government, protecting 540,000 hectares of wilderness. Named after Arthur Wellesley Gray, Minister of Lands.

1960s–70s

Roads and basic visitor infrastructure are developed, opening the park to a wider audience. Tourism in the Clearwater Valley begins to grow steadily.

The park is designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve candidate region, recognising its outstanding ecological and biological significance.

Wells Gray Provincial Park welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually and is celebrated as one of BC's crown jewels — a vast, living wilderness of waterfalls, volcanoes, and wildlife.

BC Parks – Wells Gray

~20 min drive from the ranch

Helmcken Falls is the crown jewel of Wells Gray Park — and Canada's fourth-highest waterfall. The Murtle River plunges 141 metres into a dramatic volcanic canyon, sending mist billowing high above the rim. It's one of the most awe-inspiring sights in all of British Columbia, and best visited at dawn when the mist catches the light.

Dawson Falls stretches 18 metres across the Murtle River in a broad curtain of white water — sometimes called the 'mini Niagara' of BC. It's one of the most accessible and photogenic waterfalls in the park, just a short walk from the parking area.

Spahats Falls plunges 61 metres through a series of ancient volcanic rock layers, creating a striking canyon of layered reds and oranges. This is often the first waterfall visitors encounter and it makes a stunning introduction to the park's volcanic landscape.

Moul Falls is one of the park's hidden gems — a 25-metre cascade that you can actually walk behind. The trail winds through old-growth forest along the Trophy Mountain corridor, and reaching the falls feels like a true wilderness discovery.

Helmcken Falls Rim Trail

A short, flat walk to the spectacular viewpoints above Helmcken Falls. Multiple lookout points offer different perspectives of the 141m plunge. Suitable for all ages.

Dawson Falls Trail

Easy

0.5 km

A very short, easy walk to the broad curtain of Dawson Falls. Great for families with young children and those wanting a quick but impressive stop.

Spahats Falls & Canyon Trail

Easy

1.5 km

Follows the canyon rim above the 61m Spahats Falls through open forest. Excellent views of the volcanic canyon walls at multiple points along the trail.

Trophy Mountain Meadows

Moderate

16 km

One of the park's most rewarding day hikes, climbing through subalpine forest to vast wildflower meadows with panoramic views of the Cariboo Mountains. Best from mid-July to September.

Moul Falls Trail

Moderate

8 km

A beautiful hike through old-growth forest to the stunning Moul Falls — one of the few waterfalls in BC you can walk behind. The trail follows the Battle River through peaceful wilderness.

Lewis Ruppel

These photographs, taken in 1918, are of Lewis Ruppel and his homestead — the site of what is now Wells Gray Ranch.

Lewis Ruppel was born on June 6, 1889, near Copper Hill, New Jersey. His father, Clark Ruppel, was killed in a train accident when Lewis was 2 years old, and the child was raised by his grandmother.

Lewis left home at 16, and worked in a wide variety of jobs and places as he traveled through the States and Canada: as a coal-miner, ranch-hand, and logger. He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in 1918, but was discharged because of a leg injury. Traveling west again, he found work in the Lydia Mines near Birch Island. Here he learned that land was available in the Upper Clearwater to "returned men", men back from military service in the Great War.

Filing for homestead on the SW 1/4 of District Lot 2888 KDYD, Lewis paid the princely sum of $10 for the 160 acres that would be his home for the next 50 years.

Lewis built his first house near the west boundary of his land, close to the old pack-trail that provided access into the valley at that time. He built a solid log barn, and constructed a large and sturdy root-cellar in which to store garden produce for the winter months. It was to the root-cellar that Lewis and neighbour Henry Desfosses fled when the great fire of July 1926 roared through the Clearwater Valley. The fire mercifully spared Lewis' home and barn, — so he promptly invited his less-fortunate neighbours, the Ludtke family, to move in with him until they could rebuild their devastated home.

On July 6, 1928, Lewis married Rena Peterson of Craigmyle, Alberta. Their son, Clark, was born in 1932.

The Ruppel homestead became a fine example of a well-kept farm, with a year's supply of wood split and neatly stacked, large house, ample barn, well-kept fences, and productive gardens. The house was built with the able assistance of their neighbours, Jack Hymers, Jack Tunningly, and Jack Norman. The cedar puncheon floor, smoothed with adzes by Hymers and Norman, was much appreciated as a favourite dance-floor by the rest of the community. It was Rena who planted the spruce and cottonwood saplings that still grace the front yard of what is now the Wells Gray Ranch.

Lewis farmed with horses, great Clydes and Belgians whose size and strength complemented that of Lewis himself. He was one of a very few who made his entire living from his homestead. He had run a trapline up Battle Mountain, but sold it to Everett Strom in the early 1940s. Lewis had a small herd of milk-cows, and sold cream to buy those things he could not produce for himself.

Rena died of cancer in 1946. Clark suffered from failing vision, and went to the Jericho School in Vancouver where he became completely blind. In 1949, Lewis placed an ad in the Free Press for a housekeeper. Rose Williams answered that ad, and began a career of work and companionship, staying with Lewis when he sold his homestead to an American couple in 1970. Lewis and Rose moved to Birch Island, and Lewis' last years were made glorious with the purchase of a 3-wheeled bicycle that he loved to ride. Lewis died in June of 1974; he is buried beside Rena in the Kamloops cemetery.

Lewis lives on, in the stories and memories of Clearwater Valley old timers. Recalled with great affection, everyone has at least one favourite tale about Lewis — calling an escaped piglet he was trying to catch, playing softball at our community picnic in July (in Lewis' unused pasture, neatly mowed for the occasion), or telling stories from his youth when he worked on a ranch in Montana.

My favourite memory is when Lewis danced the Rain Dance for us. It was his 70th birthday, so the neighbours had gathered at Lewis' place with a pot-luck dinner and birthday cake to celebrate. Being a farming/ranching community, talk soon drifted to the weather, and the desperate need for rain. Irrigation was unheard-of, and we trusted to God to send the rain when it was needed. Lewis considered the facts, and announced that he could do the Rain Dance, having learned it from Indians he had stayed with in Montana. Totally unselfconscious and with a childlike simplicity, Lewis danced for us, for the crops, and for the rain gods. By the time we left for home, the skies had darkened, and rain was beginning to fall.

A Swiss entrepreneur transforms Lewis' homestead into a guest ranch, recognizing the special magic of the place and opening it to travelers seeking authentic wilderness experiences.

The Mueller Era

Mike Mueller from Austria and his wife Regina purchase the ranch. Under their stewardship, the ranch flourishes with up to 75 horses, 50 sled dogs, extensive canoeing programs, and the birth of the Black Horse Saloon with live music and annual festivals.

Brunner & Weber Years

Elvira Brunner and Daniel Weber continue the guest ranch legacy, maintaining the spirit of hospitality and adventure that defines Wells Gray Ranch.

A Belgian Dream Realized

Arne Schellemans and Tunde Nemeth, along with their daughters Hannah and Zoey, arrive from Belgium to become the new caretakers of this remarkable place, bringing fresh energy to an enduring legacy.

A Living Legacy

From Lewis Ruppel's humble 160-acre homestead to a thriving guest ranch welcoming visitors from around the world, Wells Gray Ranch stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this place.
